Episode 4 – The Travelling Web Designer Podcast 🎙️

Real talk: does your business actually fit you — or is it slowly strangling the freaking life out of you?

Here’s the thing… most of us start our businesses by copy-pasting someone else’s web design business setup. Packages, pricing, funnels — ctrl+C, ctrl+V. And before you know it, you’re running a Franken-biz that looks “successful” on Instagram but feels like absolute chaos behind the scenes. Oops!!

I should know. I’ve been there.

Flashback to Scotland. I’m sitting in our self-built Aussie 4wd camper, parked up overlooking the sweetest little riverside village. The joy of the simple life buzzing all around me… and there I am, glued to my laptop, crying my eyes out.

Inbox blowing up.
Answering the same client questions on repeat.
Working with people who weren’t even a good fit (hello, scarcity mindset).
Praying the next project would come through.

I’d built a business that looked free on paper — but felt like a freaking prison!

And here’s what I’ve learned since: your quirks, your rhythms, your so-called “inconsistencies”? They’re not flaws. They’re the whole damn point!

🎧 Listen now:

Some days I want a slow morning, cuppa in hand, sun on my face.

Other days I’m bouncing out of bed ready to smash out 10,000 ideas before breakfast like a maniac.

Sometimes I’m a hermit who thrives in silence. Other days, I crave the buzz of a café.

And that’s okay. That’s me. And when I honour my personality is when I produce my best work!

So stop feeling bad for being YOU.
Stop boxing yourself in.
Your business should flex with your life, not suffocate you.

That’s the beauty of being a location independent web designer — you get to create a business that bends and shifts around your lifestyle. Whether you’re working from a café in Albania, a co-working space in Mexico, or your own backyard — freedom comes from building a business that works for you.

First steps to being a location independent web designer:

Ask yourself questions like:

  • 1. When do you feel most productive? Early mornings? Late nights?

  • 2. What environment makes you thrive? Silence, buzz, or a change of scenery?

  • 3. What projects light you up? Stop offering the ones that drain you.

  • 4. How much income do you actually need? Break it down weekly, make it realistic.

  • 5. How can you respect your rhythms? Energy, cycles, motivation — they ebb and flow, and that’s not weakness. That’s human.

If your biz has been feeling heavier than it should — grab your headphones. This one’s your reminder that you don’t have to build your business like anyone else.

These are questions that often come up for students of my Nomadic Business Blueprint course, and with the creatives who I coach 1:1 through becoming location-independent.

Your “quirks” are your superpower. Don’t tone them down — learn to make them work for you!
